Seagate and Western Digital Reduce Warranties for Some Hard Drives

Seagate and Western Digital, which supply hard drives to most of the major computer brands, will soon reduce warranty coverage on several of their storage devices.

The companies said reducing the warranty periods would allow them to invest in areas of innovation that would benefit customers more. But they did not specify what areas of innovation they might be investing in.

For Western Digital, warranties for the Caviar Blue, Caviar Green and Scorpio Blue hard drives will be reduced to two years from three years. The company said the new warranty policy was unrelated to the floods in Thailand that crippled component factories in July 2011. It said the reduced warranty would allow it to put resources into improving technologies, support and reliability, but did not elaborate.

Seagate’s warranties for internal desktop and laptop drives will be reduced to one year from five years, while warranties for “hybrid” drives — combinations of solid-state drives and traditional hard-disk drives — will be trimmed to three years from five years. Warranties for Seagate’s external drives and enterprise-oriented drives will remain unchanged. Seagate did not say in its statement whether the policy changes were related to the Thailand floods.

Steve Duplessie, an analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group, said that reducing a warranty was highly unusual and that he could not think of another such instance. He suggested that it was related to the Thailand floods.

“They don’t have components to fix things, so they can’t afford to fix things. They can only sell things now,” Mr. Duplessie said. “It’s bad for the consumer, but it’s kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation for the manufacturers. They’re going to back off warranties in order to support revenue, or else Wall Street will slaughter them.”

Seagate’s new warranty policies will become effective on Dec. 31, and Western Digital’s changes will begin Jan. 2, 2012. Hard drives bought before those dates will retain their original warranty policies.

NVIDIA Gives Notebook Gamers New Levels of Power, Portability With GeForce GTX 560M

NVIDIA today unveiled the first gaming notebook graphics processing unit (GPU) in its award-winning GeForce 500M Series of notebook GPUs. The GeForce GTX 560M graphics processor hits the "sweet spot" for gaming notebooks by delivering a no-compromise gaming experience at full 1080p resolution in the hottest new DirectX 11 titles. For the first time, leading OEMs will also be offering GeForce GTX gaming GPUs with NVIDIA Optimus technology.
"The GeForce GTX 560M and NVIDIA Optimus mean gamers get 50 frames per second in Duke Nukem Forever and five hours of battery life in Microsoft Office," said Rene Haas, general manager of notebook products at NVIDIA. "That's real power and real portability." Available only with NVIDIA GPUs, NVIDIA Optimus technology enables extra-long battery life by automatically switching on and off the GPU so that it runs only when needed. The smart convenience of NVIDIA Optimus technology is designed into over 80 percent of GeForce 500M Series notebooks and is used by every major notebook OEM.
For thin-and-light notebooks, NVIDIA also refreshed its entry-level GeForce GT 500M GPUs with the arrival of the new GeForce GT 520MX GPU. GeForce GT 520MX offers better performance, wider support and a more advanced feature set than integrated graphics and offers a step forward from the existing GeForce GT 520M GPU.
